Proposal Preparation Guidelines
Suggested Steps in the Proposal Preparation Process
- Notify Sherry Yocum of your intent to submit a proposal. Please specify the submission deadline and agency. To make it easier, we have prepared a simple form you can fill out and drop in the mail; or, you may send equivalent information by e-mail to yocum@pop.psu.edu.
- You are encouraged to meet with core directors to discuss the specific needs of your planned research. Sherry can provide overall guidance in preparing the budget. A final budget should be completed one week prior to the submission deadline so that it can be reviewed in advance by Nancy Landale and the various deans and department heads who are required to sign-off on your proposal.
- Provide the necessary background information on the proposal to the Administrative Core so they can update and prepare supporting documentation for the proposal. (See Proposal Submission Materials page for list of items.)
- Notify your department head of your plans to submit a proposal. This helps to avoid confusion when last-minute signatures are requested.
- Complete and submit the human subjects clearance forms (see Proposal Submission Materials page). The Administrative Core can handle submission of the completed forms. Simple questions about completing the forms can be directed to the Administrative Core. (5-0486). Detailed questions should be directed to the Office for Research Protections (5-1775).
- Plan to complete a draft of the proposal with sufficient time to allow for internal review (the principal investigator can select reviewers or ask Nancy Landale or Rukmalie Jayakody for recommendations on possible internal reviewers). Taking the time for this step, and carefully responding to the reviewers' comments, significantly improves the quality and consistency of proposals submitted.
- Make corrections and format the final version of the proposal (the Administrative Core can assist with this).
- Make copies and obtain signatures. The Administrative Core will take care of this, but making copies and getting all signatures may require some time.
