Surveying Opinions on Possible Section Publications

Date Posted: June 20, 2008

The Section's Ad hoc Committee on Publications has tried several methods over the last year to gauge interest in the types of aging / life course publication outlets that Section members might like to see. We greatly appreciate the feedback we have received so far and would like a bit more before the annual ASA meetings in Boston. So, to make the most effective use of the remaining time, we developed a short online survey (about 5 minutes). The survey provides an opportunity for you to articulate your use of--and potential need for--a wide array of Section activities as well. Here is a link to the survey, which will be open from June 15th to July 15th:

Thank you for your cooperation. The results will be tallied for the committee report and submitted to Council prior to the annual meeting. Please feel free to contact Cheryl Elman, Ad hoc Committee chair: cheryl2@uakron.edu, if you have any questions.

December Message from the Chair

Date Posted: December, 2007

One of the areas I promised myself and others that I would work on during my year as section chair falls under the category of opening up more "lines of communication" among section members. I plan to devote some space to this topic in the Winter, 2008 Newsletter. For now, consider the following document, titled "Six Ways of Communicating."

Express Your Views on SALC Publication Issues

Date Posted: December, 2007

Within the first several months of 2008, a key topic of discussion among the membership of SALC will be about the section's publication options. The Ad Hoc Committee on Publications is gathering information and member's views on publication matters. There are several ways to voice your ideas about this matter, including the SALC discussion listserv, the ASA Topic Forum, or by communicating directly with the members of the Publications Committee. See the following document, titled "Publication Options."

New Research Group on "Age and Consumption"

Date Posted: December, 2007

The Section on Aging and the Life Course sponsors several Research Groups that function as interest groups and informal networks within the Section. There are plans to form a new Research Group on Age and Consumption in 2008. The collective welcomes scholars (a) with an interest in age and all phases of the consumption cycle: markets, production, acquisition, possession, and disposal; (b) who study all manner of commodities and goods, such as housing, financial services, leisure and travel, fitness, and self-care, but also a host of other consumer items; (c) who focus on consumption from the perspective of the enterprise, the consumer, or both; and (d) who theorize about the intersection of life course, identity, and consumption.

Whether you are a Section member or not, student or faculty, the organizer, David Ekerdt, would welcome a note of inquiry. If there is sufficient interest, the Research Group could have its first meeting at the ASA meeting in Boston, in conjunction with the Aging and Life Course section's Roundtable session on August 1, 2008. Possible presentations at that session would be eligible for listing in the ASA meeting program. Please direct inquiries and expressions of interest to David Ekerdt at the University of Kansas (dekerdt@ku.edu).
