Awards, Honors or Appointments
John Casterline was re-elected to a four-year term-2006-2009-to the (governing) Council of the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population [IUSSP], the leading international demographic association.
Melissa Hardy completed her term as Chair of the Section on Behavioral and Social Sciences of the Gerontological Society of America at the 2005 GSA meetings in Orlando FL in November.
Scott Hofer was appointed as Consulting Editor of the journal, Multivariate Behavioral Research.
Carla Miller was appointed as Associate Director of the Penn State Diabetes Center beginning January, 2006.
Duane Alwin was appointed to a three-year term on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Gerontology: Social Sciences, beginning January, 2006.
Duane Alwin was appointed to a one-year term on the Margret Baltes Award Selection Subcommittee, Behavioral and Social Science Research Section, Gerontological Society of America, 2005-2006.
New Grant Awards:
Carla Miller was awarded a grant from General Mills Corporation for the study "Glycemic Index and Health Outcomes in a Nationally Representative Sample." The purpose of this study is to examine the relations among dietary intake, particularly the glycemic load of Americans' diets, body weight and metabolic outcomes. The dietary intake and characteristics of those who are normal and overweight will be compared.
Conferences and Professional Meetings
Paul R. Amato made an invited presentation, "Marital Conflict, Marital Instability, and Children's Well-Being," at a conference, "Studying Intimate Relationships and Family Dynamics," held in Mannheim, Germany, July 22, 2005.
Paul R. Amato served as Discussant for session on "Development of Romantic Relationships during Adolescence and Young Adulthood: Links with Other Relationships and Adjustment," at the annual meetings of the Society for Research on Child Development, Atlanta, April 8, 2005.
Paul R. Amato presented the keynote address, titled "Long-Term Consequences of Divorce for Children" at the meetings of the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts, held in Sedona, Arizona, February 3, 2006.
Melissa Hardy presented a paper, "Older Workers in the U.S." at a conference titled "Ageing, Work and the Enterprise," held in Monte Verita, Switzerland, sponsored by Leopoldina-acatech-Arbeitsgruppe.
Scott Hofer made an invited presentation titled "Methodological Considerations and Approaches for Examining Aging-related Changes" at the Case Western Reserve Geriatric Education Center, Case Western Reserve University and Metro-Health Medical Center in October 2005.
