Center on Population Health and Aging (CPHA) Launched
The new Center on Population Health and Aging (CPHA) is now up and running. This reflects the collective efforts of many faculty and staff. Many thanks for all of your hard work! A summary of what has been accomplished thus far is provided below to acquaint you with the center. In addition, major upcoming events and opportunities are showcased.
CPHA Staff Assistant
Ms. Terrie Knaresboro joined CPHA as a staff assistant January 3rd. She will be assisting in the day-to-day administration of the center. In addition, Terrie will also be supporting CPHA faculty. If you need logistical support for organizing meetings (both large and small), making arrangements for project related travel, or preparing grant proposals, please contact Terrie. Her email address is: tck3@psu.edu. Her phone number is 863-6436.
CPHA "Digs"
Thanks to the generosity of Susan Welch, Dean of the College of the Liberal Arts, CPHA occupies five offices in Pond Laboratory. This is a great location near Oswald Tower and Henderson - where most of our faculty are located. Duane Alwin is located in 326A, and there is an additional research office and conference room adjacent to his office. Mark Hayward and Terrie Knaresboro are in 107 and 105 Pond respectively. We encourage CPHA faculty to take advantage of the dedicated conference room. Please contact Terrie for scheduling.
Website
The website for CPHA is http://www.pop.psu.edu/cpha/. I invite all of you to visit the website. The website describes the overall mission and activities of the center, it has a directory of CPHA faculty, and it summarizes current and recent faculty research activities. Information is provided about faculty hiring, funding announcements, and graduate and postdoctoral training opportunities. The website has a growing stock of electronic resources for you and your students. Last but not least, the website has the capability of serving as the central location for project-specific information and data. Software for project management is available, and access to information and data is restricted to appropriate users.
Please take a cruise when you get a chance!
The website is far from complete. In a few days, you will be contacted to provide additional information for the website. Your input is important for us to showcase the rich array of CPHA faculty scholarly activities. Our goal is for the site to be fresh and dynamic, so we will be contacting you periodically. In addition, the website will grow as new resources and information about important events are added.
We welcome your suggestions about developing the website. Please let us know in what ways the site could be developed, and we will do our best to incorporate your suggestions.
CPHA Pilot Project Research
CPHA's four pilot projects for this year have been approved for funding by the National Institute on Aging. The projects span an impressive list of topics and the faculty are from a wide variety of scientific disciplines. The projects are excellent examples of interdisciplinary research that blends population perspectives with perspectives from disciplines such as human development, nutrition, and behavioral genetics. I encourage you to take a look at the project summaries.
Upcoming Events
Please reserve the dates of May 20-22. Duane Alwin and Scott Hofer are hosting an NIA-sponsored conference on cognitive aging, the International Conference on the Future of Cognitive Aging Research. The roster of participants is a "Who's Who" of outstanding social scientists. We will provide more details about the conference as it draws closer, but mark your calendars now! Please note that the dates of the conference have changed and the dates noted above are correct.
This Spring, CPHA will initiate a thematic speaker series on "Life Course Perspectives on Health and Aging." Outside speakers will not only be giving scientific presentations, but they also will be staying on campus for an extra day to meet with faculty and students. The idea is to use the outside speakers to stimulate new ideas and project development. If you have ideas about future themes/speakers, we welcome your suggestions! Also, if you have friends visiting from other universities whom you think would enjoy giving a talk, we would be glad to work with you in pulling an event together.
CPHA has arranged for Harold Lentzner and Elsie Pamuk, National Center for Health Statistics, to visit campus April 6, 2005. They will be giving several presentations on the NCHS Data Warehouse on Trends in Healthy Aging. One presentation will provide a general overview of the Warehouse. Other presentations will provide introductions to several university-level educational modules that NCHS is developing, as well as a hands-on class on how to use the Warehouse. The Data Warehouse is an excellent resource both for our own research and graduate and undergraduate instruction. Additional information about times and locations will be distributed as April 6th approaches.
The annual meetings of the Population Association of America will be held in Philadelphia, March 31st - April 2nd.
