Pilot Projects

Pilot Project 7: The Relationship between the Metabolic Syndrome and Cognitive Function

Principal Investigator: George Vogler (Penn State). Co-investigators: Roger J. M. McCarter (Penn State), Gerald E. McClearn (Penn State), Stig Berg (Institute for Gerontology, Jönköping, Sweden), Bo Malmberg (Institute for Gerontology, Jönköping, Sweden), and Sven Nilsson (Institute for Gerontology, Jönköping, Sweden)

Specific Aims

The overarching aim of this pilot proposal is to develop a full protocol to incorporate detailed measures of characteristics of the metabolic syndrome, which is characterized by diabetes, obesity, dyslipidemia, and hypertension, into existing protocols for cognitive and functional assessment in studies of Swedish adults who are beginning to enter the period of risk for adverse outcomes of the metabolic syndrome, determine the feasibility of ascertaining offspring of participants in previous twin studies conducted in Sweden, field test the protocol in a small sample, and develop an application for funding for full-scale implementation of the study. The specific aims are as follows:

  1. To support a visit of Penn State investigators to collaborators in Jönköping, Sweden, to develop this project as the next phase of a long-standing productive collaboration.
  2. To determine the availability of offspring of an ongoing study of Swedish elderly twins to be recruited into the proposed study.
  3. To finalize and field-test the extensive protocol in a sample of 10 individuals.
  4. To review protocols of previously collected data to determine the extent to which there is sufficient information to analyze the relationship of metabolic syndrome related measures and cognitive performance.
  5. To complete an application for full funding for submission in 2006.
