Pilot Project 9: The Contribution of Incarceration to Racial Differences in Mortality
Principal Investigator: Michael Massoglia (Penn State).
Specific Aims
The purpose of this pilot project is to demonstrate the feasibility of a research agenda examining the contribution of the penal system to racial differences in morbidity and mortality, and to establish the basis for the subsequent investigation of a mortality-incarceration linkage in older populations. The present research uses data from the annual data collections of the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, which surveyed persons aged 14-22 at baseline in 1979, focusing on whether incarceration experiences can partially account for racial differences in mortality and morbidity, net of other relevant factors.
