Useful websites and documents relating to the 2000 Census

As of Wednesday October 17, 2001 the Census Bureau announced its decision to use unadjusted data for nonredistricting purposes.  The Census Bureau will release the remaining Census 2000 data products, postcensal estimates and survey controls using unadjusted data.  Click HERE for more information from the Executive Steering Committee Report.

Race Contours 2000 at USC - A web site about the spatial-temporal distribution of the population by race.

University of Wisconsin - Public FTP site - SAS transport files for all states plus the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico for Census 2000 PL94_171 redistricting files. We have converted the three ASCII files for each state into one UNIX compressed (.Z) SAS Transport file for each state. Also included at the site are a copy of the technical documentation for the PL94_171 files, two sets of UNIX checksums for each file, and a readme file which explains file naming conventions. These files range in size from 3 to about 70 megabytes.  Scroll to or "find in page" "CENSUS 2000" under "SAS Export Files" (without the quotes).

CENSUS 2000--DATA : The Census Bureau is beginning its release of Demographic Profiles from the 2000 Census. This dataset will include demographic data on age, race, Hispanic Origin, and Houshold. Summary level data will be available at the national level down to MSA, and at the
state level down to the place level. At present, a schedule for the next two weeks releases, as well as technical documentation, is available.

Summary File 1 Data for 2000: This site contains a listing of all the SF1 data currently available.  Links to Technical Documentation, Read Me file, and to purchase CD-ROM also included on this page.

SAS Code for 2000 SF1 Files - SAS code that will read the set of 40 ascii files that will comprise a single SF1 logical file.  The SAS code (pre-tested against a special test file, but almost certain to be modified once we get to run it against a real file) can be viewed/downloaded at the Missouri Census Data Center website.

Department of Housing and Urban Development/Census: "CHAS (Comprehensive Housing Affordability Strategy) 2000 Data - (Query system and raw data in Dbase .dbf format). More information about the data, as well as links to the query system and raw data, can be found at the link above.

2003 TIGER/Line Files - The 2003 TIGER/Line file coverage is as follows: all counties, parishes, boroughs, census areas and equivalent entities for each state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the Island Areas. Files are in .zip compressed format, by state.
