How do I read PDF files?

PDF files are becoming 'the' format to distribute codebooks and documentation from government agencies.

HOW DO I USE IT?

On Unix - change to the directory where the pdf file is located and type 'acroread filename'  This will bring up the file in Acrobat Reader.

On a PC - you need to have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your pc or use XWIN (then follow directions for Unix).  Please ask the computer guys to install XWIN on your office pc if you have access to the Unix network.  For non-networked personal computers you can download Acrobat Reader HERE.

WARNING!  Codebooks can be very large, if you do not have to, please DO NOT PRINT on a shared printer.  If you have to print, please do not send more than one page at a time or you will fill the print que and disable the printer until it is cleared.

PRINTING:  You print pages from within Adobe Acrobat Reader (not via a command from a unix window).  Once you have an Acrobat Reader window open with a document, choose File and then Print.  You can type in the pages you are interested in as well as direct the printing to different network printers.  In the 'Print Command' area, you can type in the following:

  • Leave the print command area as is -- your job will print using your default settings
  • lpr -Plw501     -- this will send the job to the 5th floor printer
  • lpr -Plw806 -Z'duplex'         -- this will send the job to the 8th floor printer and will duplex the pages
  • psnup -p2 | lpr -Plw501 -Z'duplex'        -- this will send the job to the 5th floor printer and will print two pages per 8 1/2" X 11" sheet on both sides --> or 4 pages of text to one 8 1/2" X 11" sheet of paper.

AGAIN, PLEASE DO NOT PRINT UNLESS YOU ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO!  THE DATA ARCHIVIST CAN GET YOU A COPY OF A CODEBOOK SHOULD YOU NEED ONE.

Searching for Variables
Click on the binoculars icon and a window will pop-up asking you for the word you would like to find.  At this time, not all of the PDF documents on our network are not searchable.  This will change sometime in the future.
