PRI Data Archive Instruction

Every fall, the PRI Library and Data Archive offer a combined introductory seminar for students in Penn State's Graduate Program in Demography on available services and how to use both collections. If you miss the fall seminar, you may contact the library staff to schedule an individual instruction session.

More advanced workshops on locating and accessing data are offered through the PRI Workshop Series.

Detailed help with accessing data for PRI affiliates, other Penn State researchers, and visitors is available on the SodaPop Web site.

Acquisitions and Special Services

Obtaining Data from External Sources

The Data Archivist can download or order data resources for inclusion in the PRI Data Archive at the request of PRI faculty affiliates and Demography graduate students. Obtaining datasets that have an associated fee is subject to the approval of the PRI Information Core Director. Data resources can also be ordered and charged to a researcher's project budget. Donated datasets and documentation are accepted and added to the PRI Data Archive collection if appropriate for demographic research.

Codebook Printing

PRI faculty and students may request hardcopy documentation according to our Codebook Policy.

Special Services for PRI Faculty Affiliates

Personal Copies of Datasets - PRI faculty affiliates may request datasets for personal use - e.g. data downloaded and burned to CD-ROM, ordering free copies of CD-ROMs (if there is an associated cost, please see above).

Restricted Data Consultation - The PRI Data Archivist manages multiple restricted use data licenses/agreements/contracts for PRI faculty researchers. PRI faculty members interested in obtaining access to restricted data may consult with the Data Archivist to find out if we have an existing agreement, or if a new agreement must be drawn up. New agreements are handled on a case-by-case basis, as each is unique. To schedule a consultation, please email the Data Archivist.

Primary Data Distribution / Deposit - PRI faculty affiliates may consult with the Data Archivist on possible primary data distribution options (e.g. through PRI and/or deposit with ICPSR). To schedule a consultation, please contact the Data Archivist.

Current Awareness Services: The Information Core provides basic current awareness services for PRI researchers.
