Note from the Director

I am pleased to announce that Dr. Leif Jensen, Professor of Rural Sociology and Demography, has accepted the position of Director of Penn State's Population Research Institute. Leif is the fourth director since PRI was established as an NICHD-supported population center in 1991, and the seventh director since the founding of a formal population research program in 1972.

Leif received his Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Wisconsin where he was an NICHD trainee in demography. Leif's appointment is a great example of the long-term career effects of being an NICHD trainee! Leif has been on the Penn State faculty since 1989, and he has been an active researcher within PRI. In collaboration with his colleagues he has had grant support from the National Institute on Aging, the Ford Foundation, the Spencer Foundation, the Mellon Foundation, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Leif also has played a key role in graduate training in PRI's dual-title Ph.D. program in demography. Leif has taught many of PRI's demography students about poverty in the United States, the sociology of development, and the problems of children and youth in developing countries.

Leif is a nationally recognized scholar in a number of areas - the social, economic, and demographic circumstances of immigrants and their children, the trends in and etiology of underemployment among key demographic segments of the U.S. population, the economic coping strategies of urban and rural poor families, and the nature and determinants of children's school attendance, school performance, and labor force participation in Latin America. Through his research activities on these major questions, Leif will provide important scientific leadership on key domestic and international population problems now confronting policymakers.

I would like to express my thanks to Leif for taking on the leadership of one of the nation's premier population research centers. I also owe a great debt of gratitude to my PRI colleagues. All of you have made my tenure as PRI Director the highlight of my academic career. As director of Penn State's Social Science Research Institute, I look forward to working with Leif and you to continue developing cutting-edge research and graduate training in the population sciences.

Director
