New Faculty Associates
Francis Dodoo (Ph.D., 1988, University of Pennsylvania), professor of sociology and demography. Research interests: Demographic and health outcomes associated with urban poverty; intergenerational transfer of norms governing the gendered stratification of sexuality; the male role and the intersection of gender and power on fertility decision making; Africans and other black immigrants in the United States.
Nezih Guner (Ph.D., 1999, University of Rochester), Assistant professor of economics. Research interests: Economic demography; human resources and income distribution; public finance.
Melissa Hardy (Ph.D., 1980, Sociology, Indiana University), professor of human development and family studies and sociology; Director, Gerontology Center. Research interests: Individual and family issues involved in working at older ages; retirement; age discrimination; women's issues in old age; financial security in old age; techniques of data analysis.
Peter Kemper (Ph.D., 1973, Economics, Yale University), professor of health policy and administration. Research interests: Long term care financing and policy; managed care; Medicare post-acute care.
Awards and Recognition
Dr. Paul Amato, professor of sociology & demography, received the Stanley Cohen Distinguished Research Award, Association of Family and Conciliation Courts, May 29, 2003.
Dr. Jeffrey Cohen, assistant professor of anthropology and demography, received the García-Robles Fulbright award for research/teaching in Mexico with the Instituto Tecnologico Oaxaca for summer 2004.
Dr. Jeffrey Cohen, assistant professor of anthropology and demography, has been named co-editor of the new journal Migration Letters: an International Journal of Migration Studies, based at Atilim University, Ankara, Turkey.
Dr. Gordon F. De Jong, Distinguished Professor of Sociology & Demography and director, Graduate Program in Demography, has been named Chair, Population Section, American Sociological Association.
Dr George Farkas, professor of sociology, demography, and education, has been elected Secretary/Treasurer, 2003, Sociology of Education Section of the American Sociological Association.
Dr. Glenn Firebaugh, department head and professor of sociology and demography, is Member of visitation committee, Harvard University Department of Sociology, and Member, Nominations Committee, Eastern Sociological Society.
Dr. Constance Flanagan, professor of agricultural and extension education, was a member of the Advisory Board to CIRCLE (the Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement), and was listed in the media guide, Expert Sources on Youth Civic Engagement, which is distributed to leading education and political journalists, key members of Congress, and prominent education and civic organizations. Dr. Flanagan was also on the 2002 Carnegie Corporation/CIRCLE Committee on Civic Education.
Dr. Constance Flanagan, professor of agricultural and extension education, was appointed to the advisory board for Youth and Globalization in the 21st Century, Social Science Research Council, for the period 2002-2005.
Dr. Mark Hill, assistant professor of sociology and demography, has been appointed to the Editorial Board of Demography.
Dr. Eric Plutzer, associate professor of political science and sociology, was appointed to the editorial boards of Social Science Quarterly and American Politics Research.
Dr. David Post, associate professor of comparative and international education, has been appointed as Co-editor of The Comparative Education Review during the 2003-2008 period.
Dr. Sean Reardon, assistant professor of education and sociology, is Contributing Editor, American Journal of Education.
Dr. Pamela Farley Short, professor of health policy & administration and demography and director of the Center for Health Care and Policy Research, was awarded the 2003 Helen G. and Evan G. Pattishall Outstanding Research Achievement Award by Penn State's College of Health and Human Development.

Dr. Paul Amato, professor of sociology & demography, presented "Change and Challenge: 40 Years of Evolution in Families" and "Research Update on Children and Divorce" at the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts, Ottawa, Canada, in May, 2003.
Dr. Jeffrey Cohen, assistant professor of anthropology and demography, presented "Regional Variation in Transnational Migration: Patterns and Outcomes in the Central Valleys of Oaxaca, Mexico," for the Department of Anthropology and the Working Group on Anthropology and Population, Brown University, October 3, 2003; "Transnational Communities in North America: The Cultural Dimensions," at a conference of the U.S.-Mexico Foundation for Culture (ContactoCultural), sponsored by the Rockefeller Foundation, Los Angeles, California, August 25 and 26, 2003; and "Globalization, Gender and the Study of Oaxacan Migration," for the workshop on Gender, Globalization and Localization at Syracuse University, June 6-7, 2003.
Dr. Gordon F. De Jong, Distinguished Professor of Sociology & Demography and director, Graduate Program in Demography, presented "Paradigms for Graduate Training in Population Studies," and "How to Get Your First Article Published," invited section presentations at the annual meeting of the American Sociological Association, Atlanta, GA, August 16, 2003; and "Pennsylvania's Brain Drain Migration and Labor Force Education Gap," invited keynote address at the Pennsylvania State Data Center Conference, Harrisburg, PA, September 18, 2003.
Dr. George Farkas, professor of sociology, demography, and education, presented "Publishing in Journals" to the Early Career Scholars Workshop, Sociology of Education Section of the American Sociological Association, August 15, 2003, Atlanta, GA; and was invited discussant, Session on "Family Background and Academic Achievement," at the Annual Meeting of the American Sociological Association, August 16, 2003.
Dr. Richard Felson, professor of crime, law and justice and sociology, was invited by The International Centre of Comparative Criminology to give a talk on gender and violence at the University of Montreal in October, 2003.

Dr. David Shapiro, professor of economics, women's studies and demography, gave an invited paper with Flora Nankhuni and Dr. Jill Findeis, professor of agricultural, environmental and regional economics & demography, on "Women's and Children's Work, Environmental Stress, and Children's Education in Malawi" at a workshop in Montreal, Quebec on "New Approaches to Assessing the Determinants of Demand for Primary Education in Africa." The workshop was co-sponsored by the UNESCO Institute for Statistics and the Quebec Inter-university Centre for Social Statistics.
