New External Research Funding

Extending the Outreach of the ARDA

Dr. Roger Finke, professor of sociology and religious studies and director of the Association of Religion Data Archives, received funding for three years from the Lilly Endowment for a project to extend the outreach of the Association of Religion Data Archives (ARDA) and to continue expanding the archive. Since going online in 1998, the ARDA (www.TheARDA.com) has grown from a data repository for researchers to a prized and popular tool for educators, church leaders, and those in public policy. This grant will support development of GIS tools for customized demographic reports and a QuickStats feature that will allow religious leaders as well as researchers to quickly locate survey results on topics of interest.

Global Research Activity Partnership: Unwanted Childbearing

Dr. John Casterline, professor of sociology and demography, received funding from USAID/Johns Hopkins University for a project which will examine the consequences of unwanted childbearing through analysis of data from rural Bangladesh. Antenatal care, early childhood mortality (risk of death up to age 5), child vaccination, and child schooling will be considered, using data collected by the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh [ICDDR,B] over the period 1982-1998 in two surveillance areas. An important feature of these data is that the planning status of births (wanted vs. unwanted) can be ascertained prospectively. PRI graduate student Satvika Chalasani will be working on the project.

How Much Satisfaction Does Income Buy? Cross-Country Comparisons

Dr. Glenn Firebaugh, Distinguished Professor of Sociology and Demography and College of the Liberal Arts Research Professor, received funding for one year from the National Science Foundation to conduct the most thorough study to date of the effect of income on life satisfaction. Using several large data sets, including the World Values Survey (WVS), the largest systematic attempt ever made to document values, attitudes, and beliefs around the world, the investigators will be able to combine data from 55 rich and poor countries, comprising over 200,000 individuals in 161 income contexts, thus providing a rich set of data for testing hypotheses.
