Faculty Focus
New Research Associates
Emily Greenman (PhD, Sociology and Public Policy, University of Michigan, 2007), assistant professor of sociology. Research interests: children in immigrant families, gender inequality at home and in the workplace, work-family balance and women's earnings, social stratification, and health inequalities.
Daphne Hernandez (PhD, Applied Developmental and Educational Psychology, Boston College, 2005), assistant professor of human development and family studies. Research interests: race and gender differences in adolescent substance use, the bi-directional relationship between poor educational outcomes and adolescent delinquency, methodological concerns surrounding measurement and reporter biases in survey measures of father involvement, and how family characteristics and mother-father relationship contribute to nonresident and resident father involvement.
Kevin J. A. Thomas (PhD, Demography, University of Pennsylvania, 2004), assistant professor of African and African American studies. Research interests: migration, urbanization, Diaspora populations, health metrics, and population and development relationships in Third World countries.
Jennifer Van Hook (PhD, Sociology, The University of Texas at Austin, 1996), associate professor of sociology and demography. Research interests: international immigration, health and well-being of children of immigrants, unauthorized migration, immigrant incorporation, welfare and poverty, and school and residential segregation.
Awards and Recognition
Dr. Duane Alwin, McCourtney Professor of Sociology and Demography, has been named Chair, Section on Aging and the Life Course of the American Sociological Association, 2007-2008.
Dr. Francis Dodoo, College of Liberal Arts Research Professor and professor of sociology and demography, was appointed member of the Social Sciences and Population Studies (SSPS) Study Section, National Institutes of Health.
Dr. Melissa Hardy, Distinguished Professor of Human Development and Family Studies and Sociology, is co-director of a new Geriatric Education Center, to be directed by Richard Schulz, University of Pittsburgh, and co-directed by Albert J. Finestone, Temple University.
Dr. Sibylle Kranz, assistant professor of nutritional sciences, has been appointed an American Public Health Association Food and Nutrition Section Council Member.
Dr. Robert Schoen, Hoffman Professor of Family Sociology and Demography, has been named to the editorial board of Demography.
Dr. Elizabeth J. Susman, Jean Phillips Shibley Professor of Biobehavioral Health, was elected to the Governing Council of the Society for Research on Child Development.
Dr. Linda Wray, assistant professor of biobehavioral health, was appointed to the editorial board of the Journal of Aging and Health.
Invited Speakers
Dr. Duane Alwin, McCourtney Professor of Sociology and Demography, presented "History, Cohorts, and Patterns of Cognitive Aging" at a conference titled Aging in a Lifespan Context, honoring the professional career of K. Warner Schaie, Penn State, June, 2007; and "Who's Talking about My Generation?" at the conference From Generation to Generation: Continuity & Change in Aging Families, honoring the professional career of Vern Bengtson, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, September 2007.
Dr. Gordon F. De Jong, Distinguished Professor of Sociology and Demography and director, Graduate Program in Demography, presented "Demography and Human Development: Research on Family Life Course Transitions and Internal Migration" at Seoul National University, Seoul, Korea, July 30, 2007.
Dr. Glenn Firebaugh, Distinguished Professor of Sociology and Demography and College of the Liberal Arts Research Professor, Dr. Sean F. Reardon (Stanford University), Dr. Barrett A. Lee, professor of sociology and demography, Dr. Stephen A. Matthews, senior research associate, associate professor of sociology, anthropology and demography, and director of the GIA Core, Kendra Bischoff (Stanford University), Dr. Chad R. Farrell (University of Alaska), and Dr. David O'Sullivan (University of Auckland) presented "Methods for Studying the Geographical Scale of Metropolitan Racial Segregation" at the Meeting of International Sociological Association Research Committee on Stratification, Brno, Czech Republic, May 2007.
Dr. Brian Grim, research affiliate, presented "Religious Persecution on a Post-Communist Globe," keynote address to the 38th annual meeting of the Association of Christians Teaching Sociology, Campbellsville, Kentucky, June 8, 2007; and "God's Economy: Religious Freedom and Socio-Economic Wellbeing," an invited presentation at the Hudson Institute, Washington, DC, July 9, 2007.
Dr. Sibylle Kranz, assistant professor of nutritional sciences, presented "WIC and Food Stamp Participation, Children's Diet Quality, and the Risk for Childhood Obesity" at the workshop "Food Assistance and Obesity: Measuring the Link," USDA ERS, Washington, DC, July 2007.
Dr. Stephen Matthews, senior research associate, associate professor of sociology, anthropology and demography, and director of the GIA Core, presented "Making the Most of Geographic Information in Family Research" at the Family Research Consortium IV Summer Institute, Duke University, Durham, June 21-23, 2007.
Dr. Suet-ling Pong, professor of education, sociology and demography, presented "Coresidence with Grandparents in Taiwan and Children's Education," Tunghai University, Taiwan, April 2, 2007; "Mainland Immigrant Children in Hong Kong," East China Normal, Shanghai, June 25, 2007; and "The Transformation of Hong Kong Society from Education Policy," Population Center, Renmin University, Beijing, China, June 27, 2007.
Dr. Pamela Farley Short, professor of health policy and administration and demography and director, Center for Health Care and Policy Research, made an invited presentation to the Pennsylvania Cancer Control Commission entitled "Economic Challenges of Cancer Survivorship" on March 30, 2007.
