Articles of Interest

Dr. Stephen A. Matthews, senior research associate, associate professor of demography and sociology (adjunct geography), and director of the GIA Core, has received support from the Center for Spatially Integrated Social Science (CSISS) to host a five-day workshop on "Population Science and GIS." The workshop is scheduled for May 19-23, 2003 at Penn State. Invited participants include Mark Gahegan and David O'Sullivan (Geography at Penn State), Paul Voss (Rural Sociology, Wisconsin), David Wong (Geography, George Mason), Livia Montana (Macro International), Trudy Suchan (Census Bureau) and Frank Tanser (Africa Center, South Africa).

Together with staff from the Minnesota Population Center, PRI's GIA Core staff are coordinating a workshop on GIS in Demography at the Population Association of America meetings in Minneapolis in May, 2003. Dr. Stephen Matthews, senior research associate, associate professor of demography and sociology (adjunct geography), and director of the GIA Core, Michelle Zeiders, GIS Analyst/Programmer, and Jason Smith, graduate student in sociology and demography, will lead various sections of the workshop.

2003 National Symposium on Family Issues

The eleventh annual National Symposium on Family Issues, entitled "Creating the Next Generation: Social, Economic, and Psychological Processes Underlying Fertility in Developed Countries," will be held October 9-10, 2003.
