New Research Affiliates
Dr. Paul Morgan (PhD, Education and Human Development, Vanderbilt, 2004), assistant professor of education. Research interests: Early literacy (especially children's motivation and task engagement) poverty, reading disabilities, and factors contributing to special education placement.

Awards and Recognition
Dr. Duane Alwin, McCourtney Professor of Sociology, Demography, Human Development and Family Studies, was appointed to a three-year term on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Gerontology: Social Sciences, beginning January, 2006; and was appointed to a one-year term on the Margret Baltes Award Selection Subcommittee, Behavioral and Social Science Research Section, Gerontological Society of America, 2005-2006.
Dr. John Casterline, professor of sociology and demography, has been elected to a second four-year term on the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population (IUSSP) Council; and has been appointed Chair, PAA International Outreach Committee. Dr. Casterline was an invited participant, WHO, Geneva, Technical Consultation on Reproductive Health Indicators for Millenium Development Goals, September 2005.
Dr. George Farkas, professor of sociology, demography, and education, was organizer, session on The Influences of Health on Socioeconomic Status, Annual Meetings of the Population Association of America, Los Angeles, CA, April 1, 2006.
Dr. Constance Flanagan, professor of agricultural and extension education, served as an advisor to the World Bank for the World Development Report 2007, Youth in the Developing World.
Dr. Scott Hofer, associate professor of human development and family studies, was appointed as Consulting Editor of the journal, Multivariate Behavioral Research.
Dr. Valarie King, associate professor of sociology, demography, and human development and family studies, served as Chair of the Nominations Committee for the Family Section, American Sociological Association, 2005-2006.
Dr. Sibylle Kranz, assistant professor of nutritional sciences, was American Public Health Association (APHA) Food and Nutrition Section Program co-chair; and The Obesity Society (NAASO) founding chair "Junior Researcher Forum" at the 2005 annual meeting.
Dr. Suet-ling Pong, professor of education, sociology and demography, was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to conduct research on Mainland Chinese Immigration to Hong Kong: Implications for Family Effects on Children's Education.
Dr. C. Shannon Stokes, professor of rural sociology and demography, received the 2006 Graduate Faculty Teaching Award at the March 20, 2006 Awards Luncheon. The award is given in recognition of outstanding teaching and advising of doctoral students at The Pennsylvania State University.
Dr. Linda Wray, assistant professor of biobehavioral health, organized and chaired a Symposium titled "Do Health-Promoting Behaviors Really Promote Health?" at the 2005 annual scientific meetings of the Gerontological Society of America.
Dr. Wilbur Zelinsky, professor emeritus of geography and demography, received the 2006 American Association of Geographers Presidential Achievement Award.

Dr. John Casterline, professor of sociology and demography, presented "Poverty, Risk, Aspirations and Childbearing" (with Sajeda Amin) at the Population Council, New York, November 2005; and "Induced Abortion in Pakistan," American University in Cairo, December 2005.
Dr. Robert Drago, professor of labor studies and industrial relations and women's studies, presented "Maximizing the Potential of Women in the Academy," plenary presentation for National Academies Committee on Women in Academe Convocation, Washington, DC, December 2005; "Making Work and Family Compatible: Challenges and Strategies for Change," keynote address, ADVANCE Day, University of Rhode Island, October 2005; and "Making Work and Family Compatible: Challenges and Strategies for Change," President and Provost's Diversity Lecture Series, Ohio State University, October 2005.

Dr. Glenn Firebaugh, Liberal Arts Research Professor of Sociology and Demography, presented "Globalization and Trends in Global Inequality," an invited talk at Cornell's Center for the Study of Economy and Society, March 17, 2006.
Dr. Scott Hofer, associate professor of human development and family studies, made an invited presentation entitled "Methodological Considerations and Approaches for Examining Aging-Related Changes" at the Case Western Reserve Geriatric Education Center, Case Western Reserve University and Metro-Health Medical Center in October 2005; and gave an invited presentation entitled "Understanding Lifelong Adaptation and Prevention: Integrating Longitudinal Evidence" at a research meeting of the Volkswagen Foundation, Hannover, Germany in February 2006.
Dr. Leif Jensen, director of PRI and professor of rural sociology and demography, presented "Beyond Washington Heights: Identities, Language and Socioeconomic Status Among Dominicans in a New Destination," Bronfenbrenner Life Course Center, Cornell University, January, 2006; and "New Immigrants in Rural America," Carsey Institute, University of New Hampshire, Durham, April, 2006.
