The data base provides the most complete and up-to-date information available on the population policies of 190 countries, drawn from the Population Policy Data Bank maintained by the Population Division. The policy topics covered in the data base are population growth, mortality, fertility, internal migration, immigration, emigration, and the integration of population variables into the development planning process. In addition to data on population policies, the diskette contains information on selected demographic indicators, including current and projected population size, current levels of fertility and mortality, current population growth rates and proportions foreign-born. The data base is being made available on diskette to facilitate the analysis of national population policies by United Nations agencies, external research organizations, the academic community and individual researchers. To increase analytical flexibility and 'user- friendliness', the diskette provides the data files and corresponding dictionaries in four commonly used formats.

The dataset includes six files, one containing data on sample persons, one containing data on sample households, one containing data on migrant household head's most recent U.S. trip, one containing life histories for all household heads, and two community-level data files: one containing information on 30 communities during the survey year and the other containing annual event history data on the communities. In total, the datafiles contain information on 42,686 persons in 6,121 households, including 9,851 persons with U.S. migratory experience and 2,186 U.S. migrant household heads.
