The Social Science Research Council will administer two new programs, The Mellon Minority Fellowship Conference and the Mellon Postdoctoral Research Grant Program, designed to nurture the development of minority scholars in the arts and sciences. Supported by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon, the SSRC's initiative builds on the Mellon Minority Undergraduate Fellowship (MMUF) program established in 1989 as the centerpiece of the Mellon Foundation's effort to support the development and training of minority scholars.
The Mellon Minority Fellowship Conference will address key challenges facing minority students in graduate school and provide participants with tools that will facilitate their progress through graduate school into academic careers.
The Mellon Predoctoral Research Program is a new component of the Foundation's continuing efforts to increase the completion rate of MMUF graduate students. This program is designed to defray some of the expenses associated with graduate study and research, helping students to build a record of academic achievement and encouraging the development of working relationships between students and other scholars. The program carries with it a system of incentives to induce students to provide regular data about their progress in graduate school.
