Tuesday's election results seem to indicate that more moderate minds will prevail in the 105th Congress. Although the GOP will still maintain control of both the House and Senate, the final results are yet to be known. The Republican margin of control in the House will shrink, but whether moderation prevails depends on the GOP leadership and selection of new committee chairs. Speaker Gingrich (RGA) handpicked supporters from the radical right to fill the chairmanships in the last Congress. It is not known if he will do so again. We do know, however, that Senator Mark Hatfield's (ROR) retirement will be felt by those of us with research interests in NIH, NSF, the Census Bureau and international population programs (see Page 2).
