The Department of Government and Politics at the University of Maryland College Park, in conjunction with its Center for International Development and Conflict Management, is pleased to announce the establishment of the Anwar Sadat Chair for Population, Development, and Peace. The Sadat Professor will direct a major program of research and outreach to the scholarly and policy making communities, designed to promote strategies to effect peace in troubled regions of the world plagued by protracted conflict. Through its sponsorship of research, conferences, seminars and public policy forums both within the US and abroad, the Sadat Chair will be dedicated to scholarly and policy relevant analysis. The Chair will be housed in the department's Center for International Develop- ment and Conflict Management, internationally recognized for its work on protracted conflict resolution. The Sadat Chair will work closely with other Center programs which include the Global Events Data Set and the Minorities at Risk/Early Warning project. The Sadat Chair Professor will hold a tenured professorial appointment in the Department and must have a superior international reputation in areas such as international and communal conflict, political and economic develop-ment, and demographic aspects of international politics. The appointee will also have recognized expertise in a particular region of the world, with preference given to the Middle East. Outstanding academic credentials and/or extensive and high level policy experience will be considered important prerequisites for consideration. The National Center for Health Statistics, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, has an opening for the position of Director, Division of Health Interview Statistics. The Director provides leadership in the design, development, and operation of statistical and information systems based on household interview surveys including the National Health Interview Survey. Candidates must have experience in planning, coordinating, and directing large-scale population-based surveys, broad knowledge of health research and policy issues, and demonstrated expertise in conducting analytic and methodological research. Four openings at the Prevention Research Center of the University of Illinois at Chicago for applied (bio)statisticians or statistically trained social or public health scientists to analyze data and write up results regarding the etiology of adolescent drug use, the prevention of violence, or smoking cessation. Masters degree or equivalent combination of education and experience required. A strong background in one (and preferably many) of the following is necessary: structural equation modeling, multilevel analysis, longitudinal data analysis, log­linear analysis. The Population Council, an international non-profit scientific research organization, seeks social scientist program associate with strong quantitative skills for a two-year appointment based in New York City. The Office of Population Research, Princeton University, seeks a Manager of Computing Services for immediate appointment. The Department of Sociology at Bowling Green State University is seeking applicants for a tenure track position in Sociology/Demography with a specialization in mortality beginning August 1997. Assistant professor preferred, but candidates at all levels will be considered. Qualifications include a PhD in sociology with specialization in demography/population studies, the potential for research, extramural funding, publication within the field, and a strong interest in both undergraduate and graduate teaching. Secondary areas are open, but preference will be given to persons with interests in one or more of the following: population and development, applied demography or public health. Responsibilities include undergraduate and graduate teaching, research and publishing, supervision of master's and doctoral level students, and active participation in departmental programs and service activities. The strong doctoral program offers specializations in criminology/deviance, social psychology, and family studies, in addition to demography.
