The 51st Session of the International Statistical Institute will be held in Istanbul, on August 1827, 1997. The first ISI Session was held in Rome in 1887 and the series has continued, except for interruptions during the two world wars. The Session is held in different countries, at the invitation of the host governments. Each Session is widely recognized as the global statistical forum for the exchange of information, research findings and experiences. The scientific program of the Session is wideranging and extensive, being drawn up by the Institute and the Sections which are responsible for the organization and subject matter of their respective meetings.
