Cohen and Grebenik  Win Nordberg Award

Joel E. Cohen and Eugene Grebenik were named winners of the first Olivia
Schieffelin Nordberg Award for excellence in writing and editing in the
population sciences. Cohen is most recently author of How Many People Can
the Earth Support? (1995). The answer, he argues, will be determined by
human choices as well as by natural constraints. He is head of the Laboratory of
Populations at Rockefeller University. Grebenik recently stepped down from his
position as managing editor of Population Studies after service on the journal
that spanned its entire 50 years. His shaping of the content of the journal
established a consistently high standard of solidity of content and clarity of style,
and contributed in no small way to the shaping of the field of population.

Congratulations to the newly elected officers of the Population Association of
America. PAA's appreciation goes to all nominees for their willingness to serve
the profession and to the third of the membership who voted in this year's
election. Special thanks also go to our tellers: Harold Lentzner, Martin
O'Connell, and Elsie Pamuk. Terms of office begin January 1, 1998. The
constitution and bylaws of the PAA, which outline the responsibilities of PAA
officers, are printed in the front of the PAA Directory of Members.
