The University of Michigan Population Studies Center and Public Data Queries, with support from the NICHD, will hold an IMMIGRATION DATA WORKSHOP in Ann Arbor, Tuesday, July 8 (noon)through Saturday afternoon, July 12. Spon-sors of this workshop will provide transportation to Ann Arbor, six nights lodging and board. The workshop is intended for research investigators who need to readily access and analyze large data sets to study contemporary and historical immigration to the United States. The data sets that will be available and discussed include:

  1. The Integrated Public Use Microdata Samples (IPUMS) from the censuses of 1850 through 1990;
  2. The 1%, 5% and 8% Public Use Microdata Samples (PUMS) from the censuses of 1940 through 1990; and
  3. Recent public use samples from the Current Population Surveys that include questions about place of birth of respondent and places of birth of respondents parents.

Principal architects of these public-use data sets will be on hand to discuss their content and to provide guidance. Information will be provided about analy-zing these data using the Public Data Queries EXPLORE software and extracting data files tailored to specific research needs using the EXTRACT program. These extracted data files will be transmitted back to the participants own research facilities. Participants will be able to use the EXPLORE and EXTRACT programs with the data sets after they complete the workshop. Presen-tations of other large-scale data sets useful for immigration research (e.g., Mexican-Migration Project, PSID) will also be made by guest speakers intimately involved with their construction. Applicants with appropriate analytic skills should prepare a twopage description of their research interests in the field of immigration and forward it along with their CV to: Lisa Neidert or Reynolds Farley, University of Michigan Population Studies Center, 1225 South University, Ann Arbor, MI 481042590; Email lisan@umich.edu or renf@umich.edu.
