The Irene Taeuber Award for Excellence in Demogra-phic Research was presented by Committee chair David Blau to Gary Becker of the University of Chicago. This award is given biennially in recognition of a record of exceptionally sound and innovative research Two Dorothy Thomas Awards for the best graduate student paper were presented by award committee chair Lynn Karoly. One went to John Ireland, a post-doc at the University of Michigan for his paper "Urban Labor Markets and the Transition out of Poverty." The second went to Heather Cobal, a PhD candidate at Brown University, for her paper "Explaining the Racial Crossover in Men's Marriage Timing."
