Fellowships and Grants


The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation announces grants to enable anthropologists to "visit" selected demographic centers and demographers to "visit" selected anthropology departments, for the purpose of collaborative research on developing country population questions. The grants may be for a period of up to one year, or two years for postdoctoral candidates, with a start date not later than September, 1998. Proposals must be prepared in collaboration with one of the anthropology departments or demographic centers selected by the Foundation, and must be submitted to the Foundation by the institution (via the university with which it is affiliated) not later than August 29, 1997. Budgets must not exceed $60,000, or $70,000 for postdoctoral candidates. Proposals will be reviewed competitively. The Office of Population Research, Princeton University, offers a Mellon-supported research position with rank appropriate to experience for research on family planning and fertility in developing countries, with emphasis on Africa. The Center for Research on Child Wellbeing of Princeton University, an interdisciplinary research center located within the Woodrow Wilson School and the Office of Population Research, is offering a postdoctoral position for a junior demographer, economist or sociologist to work on projects relating to children's health, education and economic security. Strong skills in statistics and quantitative research required, and interest in policy or program evaluation encouraged. To begin in July, 1997. PhD required. The Department of demography of the University of Montreal is seeking candidates for a post-doctoral fellowship on francophone sub-Saharan Africa. The fellow must have a PhD in demography or a related field with advanced training in demography. He or she will undertake a research project that focuses on the social, cultural, economic or health determinants or consequences of fertility behavior. Fluency in French is preferred.
