The pay line for grants at the National Institutes of Health is expected to improve substantially this fiscal year. Yet, the number of research grant applications assigned to the Social Science and Population (SSP) Study Section for review has declined. Most of the NIH-funded research on demographic issues undertaken by PAA members has been reviewed by this study section, which provides the broad range of expertise that is encompassed in our field. Particularly in the current climate of NIH reorganization, there is concern that the decline in applications reviewed by SSP could lead to its demise, which may not be beneficial to population research or researchers. All the more reason to apply now for an NIH grant.
