Highlights from the PAA Board Meeting

By Elizabeth Hervey Stephen

The Board of Directors met in Washington, D.C. on October 24. The budget for 1998 was presented by Cynthia Lloyd, Finance Chair, and was passed. The Board voted to hold the 2002 Annual Meeting in Atlanta May 9-11. The hotel site is the Hilton.

The Board enthusiastically supported the application of Barbara Entwisle and Phil Morgan to be co-editors of Demography, starting in 1999. Associate Editors will be drawn from the University of North Carolina, Duke University, and possibly the Research Triangle area. More details on submission of articles will be available to the membership next year.

A slightly revised schedule for the nominations and election of officers has been set. The Membership Committee will announce all nominations in the Spring issue of PAA Affairs. Additional nominations will be accepted until May 1 by petition signed by at least 10 members and submitted to the Secretary-Treasurer. Ballots will be sent to the membership by May 30 and ballots will be accepted in the PAA Office until July 31. The election results will be made public in the Fall issue of PAA Affairs.

Three presentations were made to the board: Suzanne Bianchi made a thorough report on awards (see page 4). John Marcotte briefed the Board on all the computer updates that have taken place in the PAA Office as a result of a report from the Computing Committee. Beth Soldo and Anne Harrison-Clark reported on the status of the Public Affairs committee activities (see page 2).

Anne Pebley reported on the planning for the 1998 Annual Meeting. She has been working with another RAND employee to develop a database for organizing the meeting that should avoid scheduling conflicts and ease planning of the meeting. In addition, the database will interface with the PAA Office and will be portable for use by future President-elects in their planning.

Hallie Kintner then presented a report on Strategic Planning.

The Renewable Natural Resources Foundation had asked PAA to become a member and that invitation was declined.

The Board applauded Karen Mason for an excellent year.
