The Population Council, a New York based international non-profit scientific research organization, seeks a Research Associate for a two-year appointment beginning early 1998. The incumbent will conduct research on the diffusion of reproductive change in developing countries, with most effort devoted to a study on this topic in Ghana. The study will examine the nature of social networks in rural Ghana with emphasis on the communication of ideas, messages, and themes about reproduction. Responsibilities include: Develop expertise in pertinent literature and participating in the design and collection of qualitative and quantitative research on communication networks. Requires PhD in a social science discipline (anthropology, economics, geography, sociology, demography, or public health), two years post-doctoral experience, and demonstrated ability to conduct research in developing countries, specifically in sub-Saharan Africa. Bowling Green State University is seeking applicants for a tenure track position in sociology/demography beginning August 1998. Research interests in all areas of population will be considered. However, preference will be given to candidates who can teach and advise graduate level students in the area of mortality. Other areas of interest include but are not limited to population and development, public health, and applied demography. Assistant Professor preferred, but candidates at all levels will be considered. The Northwestern University/University of Chicago Joint Center for Poverty Research announces its Visiting Scholars program, for untenured or junior researchers who have completed their PhDs. Each of the two campuses, the University of Chicago and Northwestern University, will have one such Visiting Scholar in residence. Candidates are invited to express a preference for one of the two universities. Applicants must be actively involved in research directly relevant to poverty in the United States. Preference will be given to scholars who can spend an entire academic year in residence, and who can particularly benefit from interaction with the affiliated faculty in one or both of the two universities involved. Maximum salary is $50,000 for the academic year, plus benefits and some research support. There is no teaching requirement. Applicants with partial funding from other sources are welcome.
