APLIC-I Union List of Serials Preface This compilation of serials holdings lists from APLIC-I (Association for Population/Family Planning Libraries and Information Centers - International) members began in the autumn of 1993, in response to a suggestion presented at the APLIC-I Board meeting. Edith Sonntag agreed to coordinate a union list project, and a letter was sent to all North American APLIC-I members in October of 1993, asking them to provide copies of their serials holdings lists in either print or electronic format. The intent was not merely to create a printed listing of holdings, but to set up an electronic database of serials information, holdings, and publisher information which could be easily revised and updated for future editions. Twenty-four institutions were able to supply serials holdings lists. Those lists were compiled into a database of over 3500 serials titles, and supplemented with publisher address information where possible. Holdings lists from that database were sent to participants for review in September of 1994, and a draft version of the union list was present at the Association of Population Centers (APC) meeting on October 28-29, 1994 in Baltimore. All contributions and revisions had been received by November 15, 1994. Acknowledgements This work is a follow-up to the original Union List of Population/Family Planning Serials which was compiled by Dr. Susan Kingsley Pasquariella in 1978, and would never have happened without her persistence and vision in putting together the first APLIC union list. Particular thanks also go to Dr. Dennis Hogan, Dr. Joseph Hotz, and to the Association for Population Centers, who generously provided a grant to fund the compilation and editing of this union list, and who have been outspoken in their support for this project and their appreciation of its value to the population research community. Of course, this union list would not have been possible without the cooperation and generosity of the participating libraries and information centers. Their efforts in making serials, publisher, and holdings information available are gratefully acknowledged. In particular, the work of Maryann Belanger and her staff at the Princeton University Office of Population Research Library in locating publication information for their large collection of foreign serials was most helpful. But beyond their cooperation in supplying information, the support, enthusiasm, and encouragement of librarians and staff from many participating institutions is very much appreciated. Finally, thanks go to Edith Sonntag for coordinating the project, initiating contacts with other APLIC member institutions, and supplying the impetus to keep things moving.
