Examples of Hot-linking Photographs
GIS can be used to add a variety of related pieces of information. In this example, taken from ongoing work in Nepal (but not part of the study) a variety of photographs have been geocoded and added as hot-links to the GIS database. That is, as one drags the cursor over a geographic feature in the digital database a file opens up containing additional information. In this example, photographs are geocoded.
Geocoded photographs have been used in many areas including crime related studies. The same principle applies should one want to embed textual documents, diagrams, charts, video clips, x-ray images, satellite images, etc. into a database.
In PopMap, a software packages developed to support population and health activities in UN member countries it is possible to embed into the geographic database photographic and textual information on diagnosis and treatment for particular diseases and a variety of other data and metadata.
