GIS and Spatial Statistical Software
GIS packages are increasingly being coupled with advanced spatial statistical software. Now it is possible to apply sophisticated spatial modeling techniques within a GIS framework using the extension programs to SpaceStat and S-PLUS (with Arcview). SpaceStat was developed by Luc Anselin and S-PLUS is distributed by MathSoft.
The following diagrams illustrate some of the drop-down menus available within Arcview with the SpaceStat and S-PLUS extensions enabled:

The map below is a Moran Scatterplot (created using the SpaceStat extension to ArcView) of the Dependent Variable in a model (Index Crime in Appalachia 1988-1992). The scatterplot classifies spatial dependence into four quadrants that reveal "high-high" and "low-low" associations - implying positive spatial association (clustering).

There are other examples of the blending of statistical and GIS programs together. For example, CrimeStat is a point pattern analysis program developed by Ned Levine for the Mapping & Analysis for Public Safety and National Institute of Justice that has the ability to export information and model results to Arcview.
