Filtering spam/virus messages on POP email

Thunderbird Instructions

  • On the menu go to Tools, then select Message Filters
  • Click on New
  • Enter in the following information: (to add another line click on the +)
     Filter name: POPNet Spam and Virus Filter
     For incoming messages that: "Match any of the following"
     Subject Contains PopNet: Virus
     Subject Contains PopNet: SPAM
    
     Perform these actions:
     Move Message to your preferred destination (ex: Junk or Trash)
     
  • Click OK
  • Exit out of Message Filters saying yes to any save prompts
  • Finished. All incoming messages will be scanned for the credentials above

Pine/Alternate Instructions

  • If you use Pine or don't want to use your email client's filtering (ex: Thunderbird) then you need to download the .procmailrc file and place it in your unix home directory. This file will automatically filter your incoming mail and put any emails marked as spam or virus into a mailbox called Junk.
