Virus/Security Resources

On this page you will find information regarding the latest viruses and security threats. Also to prevent your computer from becoming infected with a virus or compromised, follow these simple steps:

  • Keep your computer up to date with the latest patches and security fixes: www.windowsupdate.com
  • Use an antivirus package. PSU provides a free download to students, faculty, and staff Here
  • Use a firewall. Instructions on how to enable the windows firewall can be found Here. A free alternative to the windows firewall is ZoneAlarm which can be found at www.ZoneLabs.com
  • Use a spyware removal program. There are many free packages available, two being Spybot-S&D available Here and Lavasoft Ad-Aware available Here
  • Do not open unexpected email attachments or attachments sent from an unknown person.
  • Regarding phishing: Nearly all banks, corporations, and shopping sites, have instituted policies where they will never request financial/personal information via email. If you recieve an email requesting such information, it is safe to assume that it is a phishing attempt.
