Construction of Created Variables
All variables are based on variable values from the 1996 Longitudinal File Core Waves 1-12. A panel variable has a single, constant value in all months of the panel. A monthly variable has potentially different values in different months of the panel, as distinguished indicated by the monthly numerical suffix appended to the variable name.

BIRTHMO is a panel variable indicating the month given by the last non-missing value of EBMNTH.
BIRTHYR is a panel variable indicating the year given by the last non-missing value of TBYEAR.
CHMP1-CHMP48 is a monthly variable indicating coverage by CHAMPUS or military-related insurance. It equals 0 ("no") if the value of RCHAMPM is "no" and 1 ("yes") if the value of RCHAMPM is "yes" for the month.
EVER_MEDICAID is a panel variable indicating whether the respondent was ever covered by Medicaid in any month of the panel. It equals 0 ("no") if the value of MCD1-MCD48 is never 1 ("yes") and 1 ("yes") if MCD1-MCD48 is ever 1 ("yes") in any month.
EVER_PRIVATE is a panel variable indicating whether the respondent was ever covered by Medicaid in any month of the panel. It equals 0 ("no") if the value of PRIV1- PRIV48 is never 1 ("yes") and 1 ("yes") if PRIV1- PRIV48 is ever 1 ("yes") in any month.
EVER_UNINSURED is a panel variable indicating whether the respondent was ever uninsured in any month of the panel. It equals 0 ("no") if the value of UNIN1- UNIN48 is never 1 ("yes") and 1 ("yes") if UNIN1- UNIN48 is ever 1 ("yes") in any month.
HIU_HEAD1-HIU_HEAD48 is a monthly variable indicating the person is a head of his or her health insurance unit (identified by the created variable UNITID). Its value is "1" in any months when the person is a head of the unit, "0" when the person is not a head of the unit, and is missing for months in which the person was not in the survey.
INC1-INC48 is a monthly variable giving family income in the month indicated by the variable suffix. It equals the dollar value given by TSTOTINC1-TSTOTINC48 (total subfamily income this month) when the corresponding value of ESFT1-ESFT48 (family type for this month) equals 3 ("related subfamily") and by TFTOTINC1-TFTOTINC48 (total family income this month) when the corresponding value of ESFT1-ESFT48 (family type for this month) is not equal to 3 ("related subfamily").
INSTYP1-INSTYP48 is a monthly variable indicating a hierarchically determined category of insurance coverage. Its value is 1 ("Medicaid") when MCD1-MCD48 for the corresponding month is 1 ("yes"); 2 ("Medicare") when MCR1-MCR48 for the corresponding month is 1 ("yes") and MCD1-MCD48 is 0 ("no"); 3 ("Military-related Coverage") when CHMP1-CHMP48 for the corresponding month is 1 ("yes") and both MCR1-MCR48 and MCD1-MCD48 are 0 ("no"); 4 ("Private Coverage") when PRIV1-PRIV48 for the corresponding month is 1("yes") and MCD1-MCD48, MCR1-MCR48, and CHMP1-CHMP48 for the corresponding month are all 0 ("no"); and 5 ("Uninsured") when UNIN1-UNIN48 for the corresponding month is 1 ("yes").
LASTAGE is a panel variable indicating the last nonmissing value of TAGE1-TAGE48.
MCD1-MCD48 is a monthly variable indicating whether the respondent had Medicaid or SCHIP in the month given by the numerical suffix. Its value is 1 ("yes") when ECDMTH1-ECDMTH48 for the corresponding month is yes and 0 ("no") when ECDMTH1-MCDMTH48 for the month is no.
MCR1-MCR48 is a monthly variable indicating whether the respondent had Medicare coverage in the month given by the numerical suffix. Its value is 1 ("yes") when ECRMTH1-ECRMTH48 for the corresponding month is yes and 0 ("no") when ECRMTH1-MCRMTH48 for the month is no.
MILPRIV1- MILPRIV48 is a monthly variable indicating whether the respondent had military or private insurance in the month given by the numerical suffix. Its value is 1 ("yes") when EHIMTH1- EHIMTH48 or RCHAMPM1-RCHAMPM48 for the corresponding month is yes and 0 ("no") when both EHIMTH1- EHIMTH48 and RCHAMPM1-RCHAMPM48 for the month are no.
MONTHS_EMPLOYER_PRIVATE is a panel variable indicating the total number of months in which the value of PRIV_INSTYP1-PRIV_INSTYP48 is 1 ("employer-provided private insurance coverage").
MONTHS_MEDICAID is a panel variable indicating the total number of months in which the value of MCD1-MCD48 is 1 ("yes").
MONTHS_NONEMPLOYER_PRIVATE is a panel variable indicating the total number of months in which the value of PRIV_INSTYP1-PRIV_INSTYP48 is 2("non-employer-provided private insurance coverage").
MONTHS_PRIVATE is a panel variable indicating the total number of months in which the value of PRIV1-PRIV48 is 1 ("yes").
MONTHS_UNINSURED is a panel variable indicating the total number of months in which the value of UNIN1-UNIN48 is 1 ("yes").
POV1-POV48 is a monthly variable giving the annual federal poverty threshold in the month indicated by the variable suffix. It equals the dollar value given by TSFPOV1-TSFPOV48 (total subfamily income this month) when the corresponding value of ESFT1-ESFT48 (family type for this month) equals 3 ("related subfamily") and by TFPOV1-TFPOV48 (total family income this month) when the corresponding value of ESFT1-ESFT48 (family type for this month) is not equal to 3 ("related subfamily").
POVERTY is a panel variable indicating the 4-year average family income as a percentage of poverty. Its value is equal to 100*12 times the sum of INC1-INC48 divided by the sum of POV1-POV48.
POVR1-POVR48 is a monthly variable giving the ratio of the family income in the month to the federal poverty threshold in the month indicated by the variable suffix. It equals the dollar value given by INC1-INC48 (total family income this month specific to family type) multiplied by 12 and then divided by POV1-POV48 (annual federal poverty threshold for family specific to family type).
PRIV1-PRIV48 is a monthly variable indicating whether the respondent had private insurance coverage that is not military-related in the month given by the variable numerical suffix. Its value is 0 ("no") when the value of EHIMTH1-EHIMTH48 for the corresponding month is no or the value of EHIMTH1-EHIMTH48 is yes and the value of RCHAMPM1-RCHAMPM48 is yes for the corresponding month. Its value is 1 ("yes") when the value of EHIMTH1-EHIMTH48 is yes and the value of RCHAMPM1-RCHAMPM48 is no for the corresponding month.
PRIV_INSTYP1-PRIV_INSTYP48 is a monthly variable indicating whether the respondent had employer-provided or non-employer provided private insurance coverage or no private insurance coverage in the month given by the variable numerical suffix. Its value is 1 ("employer-provided private insurance coverage") when RPRVHI1-RPRVHI48 for the corresponding month is 1 ("employer-provided") and 2 ("non-employer-provided private insurance coverage") when RPRVHI1-RPRVHI48 for the corresponding month is 2 ("non-employer provided") only when the value of PRIV1-PRIV48 for the corresponding month is 1 ("yes"). Its value is 0 ("not covered by private insurance") when the value of PRIV1-PRIV48 for the corresponding month is 0 ("no").
RACE is a panel variable indicating race and Hispanic origin for the last nonmissing values of ERACE1-ERACE48 and EORIGIN1-EORIGIN48. Its value is 1 ("non-Hispanic white") when the value of ERACE is 1 ("white") and the value of EORIGIN is not 20-28 (values indicating Hispanic national origin); 2 ("non-Hispanic black") when the value of ERACE is 2 ("black") and the value of EORIGIN is not 20-28 (values indicating Hispanic national origin); 3 ("Hispanic) when the value of EORIGIN is 20-28 (values indicating Hispanic national origin); and 4 ("Other") when ERACE is not 1 or 2 and EORIGIN is not 20-28 (values indicating Hispanic national origin).
Revised_weight is a post-stratified longitudinal panel weight that adjust the 1996 SIPP longitudinal panel weight (LGTPNLWT) so that subpopulation counts match those obtained with the monthly weight for the last survey interview month. This post-stratification results from multiplying the longitudinal weight in each subpopulation (based upon age and income groups) by the ratio of the sum of the monthly weights to the sum of the longitudinal weights for that subpopulation.
SEX is a panel variable indicating the respondent's sex given for the last nonmissing value of ESEX1-ESEX48. Its value is 1 ("female") when the value of ESEX is female and 2 ("male") when the value of ESEX is male.
UNIN1-UNIN48 is a monthly variable indicating whether the respondent had no insurance coverage in the month given by the variable numerical suffix. Its value is 0 ("no, not uninsured") when any insurance coverage indicator EHIMTH1-EHIMTH48, RCHAMPM1-RCHAMPM48, ECDMTH1-ECHMTH48, or ECRMTH1-ECRMTH48 for the corresponding month is yes. Its value is 1 ("yes, uninsured") when all insurance indicators EHIMTH1-EHIMTH48, RCHAMPM1-RCHAMPM48, ECDMTH1-ECHMTH48, or ECRMTH1-ECRMTH48 for the corresponding month are no.
UNITID1-UNITID48 is a monthly variable indicating membership in a health insurance unit. This unit comprises the nuclear family with dependent children under the age of 19 or age 19-23 and in school. Family membership is identified according to family type using RFID1-RFID48 (family id for all except related subfamilies) or RSID1-RSID48 (family id for related subfamilies) for the corresponding month. Family-UNITID-eligible children within families are identified using TAGE1-TAGE48 and EENROLL1-EENROLL48 (school enrollment) for the corresponding month. Individuals not part of a family unit and children within families who are not eligible for the family UNITID in any month are assigned person-specific UNITID values for the month.
