PRI Programming and Statistics Core
The PRI Programming and Statistics Core provides support services to PRI faculty in the areas of: grant preparation, data preparation, data analysis, web-based applications and training.
General programming support for all PRI affiliates:
- Online documentation, help and coding examples on our website:
http://help.pop.psu.edu
- 'Help' desk services daily: by appointment or email help@pop.psu.edu
- Consultation on programming methods & strategies
- Consultation on the use of statistical
software and referrals for methodological questions
- Training and workshops
- Preparation of data extracts from our archive
- File conversion
Services are available to all PRI affiliates. Projects that require intensive or extended support would benefit by reserving dedicated support of one or more programmers.
Programmer support of PRI funded research projects:
In addition to the General Services provided, PRI affiliates can hire a programmer for their project to provide additional services such as:
- Database design for analysis or project management
- Team
webspaces and web-accessible
database systems
- Data management including merging, reshaping data files and variable construction
- Basic statistical analysis
- Mentoring/training of graduate assistants
- Data
sharing strategies for
primary and derived datasets
Researchers can ensure that they have the programming support they need, when they need it, by requesting programming services at the time a grant proposal is submitted. Programmers are assigned to a project based on availability and skills required. It is important to remember that although an individual programmer is assigned to your project, you will in a sense be acquiring the skills and experience of the entire team.
Statistical Consulation Services
The Programming & Statistics Core draws on existing faculty expertise within PRI to offer expert consulting on statistical problems that arise during grant proposal preparation or over the course of funded research. The Core also keeps PRI faculty and students abreast of major new developments in the statistical analysis of population data, enabling them to use the most powerful research designs and statistical methods appropriate for demographic research. This is accomplished in part by contributing to two important venues for dissemination, the Methodology Workshop which is held each summer, and the Clifford C. Clogg Memorial Lecture Series. Finally, the Statistics Core Director and members consult with the Computer Core on procuring, evaluating, and supporting the latest statistical software and routines for use by PRI faculty, staff and students.
Consultation on methodological issues is available to PRI Faculty Affiliates and Associates, please contact David Johnson (drj10@psu.edu) for an appointment.
Other services
The team also supervises a Graduate Assistantship in Social Science Research Computing.
