Faculty Training Opportunities - Demography Methods Focus
Each year, PRI's Programming and Statistics Core provides PRI faculty with an opportunity to update their knowledge and skills in a specific area of demography methods. The focus for 2008-2009 will be the use of weights with demographic data.
Overview
Use of weights in the statistical analysis of survey data is becoming more common and a virtual necessity when estimating population parameters from the large federally funded surveys. Although most software packages are able to use weighted data, a number of issues can come up that complicate their use. Many databases require making the choice among several weighting options—especially true in multiwave longitudinal studies—and the consequences of how the weights are used for standard errors and significance tests is not always clear.
