Dodoo Named Liberal Arts Research Professor

Press Release - April 13, 2006

Francis Dodoo, Penn State professor of sociology and demography and faculty research associate at the Population Research Institute, was recently named liberal arts research professor. Dodoo is spearheading a University-based collaboration between Penn State and the University of Ghana (UG) to restructure UG's Regional Institute for Population Studies (RIPS) in the mold of the Population Research Institute at Penn State. Strengthening RIPS will enhance research and learning between students and faculty at both institutions. Dodoo, who has a grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to study the influences of urban poverty on risky sexual behavior in five African cities (including Accra, Ghana), also works on how child socialization affects the development of gender in what is a highly male-dominated society. In addition, he plans to initiate a project in Ghana and Malawi on heterosexual behavior and the spread of HIV. "I am thrilled to have the opportunity to contribute to capacity development in sub-Saharan Africa and to do so in a way that facilitates my own intellectual inquiry and that of my colleagues," says Dodoo. "Naming me College of Liberal Arts Research Professor signals not only the confidence the College has reposed in me but also Penn State's support for my work in Africa." "I am delighted to recognize Francis Dodoo and his scholarship through this recognition," says Dean Susan Welch. "Francis' work in Africa are helping Penn State to become an even more international university, opening up opportunities for our students and faculty there, and bringing outstanding young African scholars here. His work is a real asset to our College and Penn State's population programs."
