Press Release - March 17, 2005

University Park, Pa. -- Diane K. McLaughlin, associate professor of rural sociology and demography, will receive the 2005 Howard B. Palmer Faculty Mentoring Award.

The Palmer Award honors and recognizes outstanding achievement by a faculty member with at least five years of active service who effectively guides junior faculty. Howard Palmer was the senior associate dean of The Graduate School from 1984 to 1991.

In support of her nomination, McLaughlin's colleagues cited her willingness to support and collaborate with junior faculty in many professional areas such as grant proposals, course and program development, outreach and extension projects, research projects and academic publication. She particularly is committed to promoting the success of new women faculty. She also is honored for her strong, active leadership within the department, college, University and her discipline.

Joining Penn State in 1989, McLaughlin has served as deputy director of the Population Research Institute and associate director of the Center on Aging and Health in Rural America at Penn State. She currently is graduate program coordinator for the community and economic development program in Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology. She was nominated and supported by the College of Agricultural Sciences to participate in the national ESCOP/ACOP Leadership Development Program in 2003. Her B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees are from Penn State.

Her research focuses on how the characteristics of the places in which people live, particularly rural communities, influence individuals' and families' opportunities, behavior, and well-being. She has published widely in refereed journals, has several book chapters and has received funding for her research from federal and state agencies.
