Osgood Awarded 2009 Faculty Scholar Medal

Five University professors have received the 2009 Faculty Scholar Medals for Outstanding Achievement.

They are J. Martin Bollinger Jr., professor of chemistry and biochemistry and molecular biology in the Eberly College of Science, the physical sciences medal; Velvet M. Brown, professor of music in the College of Arts and Architecture, the arts and humanities medal; D. Wayne Osgood, professor of crime, law and justice and sociology in the College of the Liberal Arts, the social and behavioral sciences medal; Clive A. Randall, professor of materials science and engineering in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences, the engineering medal, and Vladimir M. Zatsiorsky, professor of kinesiology in the College of Health and Human Development, the life and health sciences medal.

Established in 1980, the award recognizes scholarly or creative excellence represented by a single contribution or a series of contributions around a coherent theme. A committee of faculty peers reviews nominations and selects candidates.

In the social and behavioral sciences, Osgood, one of the most influential scholars in criminology, is nationally recognized for his statistical expertise on the analysis of longitudinal data. His articles and books regularly appear in prestigious journals and academic presses.

As a member of the MacArthur Research Network on Transitions to Adulthood, he is noted for his cutting-edge research in life-course studies and overall expertise on the transitions to adulthood. He was one of 75 eminent scholars who comprised the National Consortium on Violence Research.

At Penn State, Osgood researches a broad range of topics concerning delinquency and other problem behaviors during adolescence and early adulthood. A Fellow of the American Society of Criminology, he currently serves as vice president of the organization.

Osgood earned an bachelor of arts degree from the University of California at Los Angeles and master's and doctoral degrees from the University of Colorado.
