The TREMIN Research Program on Women's Health

Research Objectives

Data collection was begun in 1934 with the purpose of defining the temporal characteristics of the human menstrual cycle and some of its associated phenomena. Dr. Alan Treloar founded the study after being struck by the difference in conventional assumptions about menstrual cycle intervals and actual data on these intervals recorded by hospitals and physicians. His aim was to discover whether, in fact, a "regular" interval could be defined.

Subsequently, data have been collected with the view of answering additional questions about the human menstrual cycle, including questions related to age at menarche and menopause, menstrual pattern variations over the life course, factors which influence menstrual flow and interval, and health outcomes for postmenopausal women.
